Workplace Education Placement Agreement (WEPA)
Students who are REQUIRED to participate in UNPAID work placements with an external employer are eligible for coverage should they suffer a work-related accident or illness. This coverage is funded by the Ministry of Education and Training (MET) and not by the placement employers or individual schools.
Students do NOT have coverage if:
- an accident occurs during the in-class portion of training programs
- on the student's own initiative, volunteers their services to an employer to develop marketable skills
- they are on the employer's premises only for the purpose of visiting, casual observation, and there is no participation in the activities of the placement
Application procedure
Students are to take their package provided to them by their placement coordinator at the educational institution or the applications may be completed in advance and forwarded to the placement coordinator at HHS, prior to beginning work in order to have the "WORKPLACE AGREEMENT" signed by the placement coordinator and signing authority. One copy will be retained on file at HHS and 2 copies will be returned to your school.
Occupational Health
In the event of an accident, a student will:
- Promptly obtain first aid, and medical attention if required.
- Report the accident to your placement employer, preceptor and clinical instructor at your school.
- Ensure that all relevant forms have been completed.
