Georgetown Hospital Emergency

The GH Emergency Department provides treatment to more than 29,000 people every year.

The entrance to the Emergency Department is located off Princess Anne Drive.

The Emergency Department has monitoring capabilities for seriously ill patients.

What can I expect when I arrive?

Every patient in emergency is initially seen (triaged) by a registered nurse who determines the patient's level of urgency. Patients deemed to be most urgent are taken into treatment areas immediately.

Critically ill or injured patients may require transfer to other centres, which are equipped to provide a higher level of care. Transfer may take place either by land or air ambulance. A heliport is located adjacent to the emergency department.

A visit to the Emergency Department can be a very anxious and distressing time. Friends and family are welcome to stay. However, we ask that you limit your visitors to a maximum of one.

All patients seen in either emergency or ambulatory care must be registered. At the time of registration you will be requested to provide your health card. Your health card number is verified with the Ministry of Health each visit.

Vending machines are located in the waiting room area. Please check with the nurse before providing anything to eat or drink to a patient.

Will I have to wait?

Waiting times depend on many factors, which include:
  • how ill you are
  • the availability of treatment rooms, and
  • the number of patients waiting.
Critically ill or injured patients are given priority therefore you may find that others who have arrived after you may be cared for first. As well, some of the patients in the waiting room are having procedures done in the Diagnostic Imaging Department.

Factors which can increase your waiting time include:
  • limits to the number of healthcare personnel available despite the fact that additional doctors and nurses are called in during very busy periods
  • the need for tests
  • the need for specialist consultations.
Please be assured that our staff is committed to all our patients. Should you have any questions or if your condition changes during the waiting period do not hesitate to inform the nurse.

What if I have to be admitted to the Hospital?

If the need arises, you will be admitted to hospital. We will do our best to locate a bed as quickly as possible. However, there are times when beds are not available and you will be required to stay in the Emergency department. Beds are assigned according to severity of illness and space available.

After your treatment

If your doctor gives you a prescription, please check with the nurse as to the location of pharmacies in the area.

Follow up instructions will be provided. If you have any concerns you should follow up with your family doctor.
