Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Emergency

The OTMH Emergency Department provides treatment to more than 45,000 people every year. The entrance to the Emergency Department is located off Allan Street. The Department recently underwent an 18-month renovation and expansion program. Highlights of the renovated Emergency Department include:
  • separate ambulance and walk-in entrance

  • a quiet room for families

  • improved monitoring capabilities for seriously ill patients

  • the creation of a central 'hub' area offering improved visibility of patients for nursing staff while balancing privacy and ability to care for patients.

  • 6,000 square feet of new clinical space and 15,000 square feet of renovations to the existing department

What can I expect when I arrive?
Every patient who comes to the Emergency Department is initially seen - or triaged - by a registered nurse. Patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries are taken into the treatment area immediately. Critically ill and trauma patients are sometimes transferred to the trauma centres in either Toronto or Hamilton. A Helipad located at the Ford Plant, provides us with the opportunity to transfer patients by helicopter when appropriate. Patients with less urgent problems will be asked to register with the clerk.

Will I have to wait?
This depends on a number of factors including how ill you are, the availability of treatment rooms, number of patients waiting, etc. Critically ill patients are given priority therefore you may find that others who arrived after you are cared for first.

Despite the fact that additional doctors and nurses are called in during very busy periods, there are still limits to the number of health care personnel available. This can sometimes result in lengthy waits. On ocassion, it is necessary to perform tests or call in a specialist which may lead to an additional wait.

Please be assured however that the staff are committed to ALL our patients. Should you have any questions or if your condition changes during this waiting period do not hesitate to approach the nurse in charge.

What about friends and family?
We realize a visit to the Emergency Department can be a very anxious and distressing time. Friends and family are welcome to stay, however, limiting visitors to a maximum of two at a time would be very much appreciated.

Vending machines are located just inside the Emergency entrance. If you are a patient please check with the nurse before you have anything to eat or drink.

Parking
There is limited courtesy parking spaces for ER patients. Spots are clearly marked. If necessary, patients are directed to park in the paid parking area. Please bring your parking ticket into the Hospital. A payment machine is conveniently located in the Emergency Department.

What if I have to be admitted to the Hospital?
If you need to be admitted we will do our best to locate a bed as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, it is sometimes necessary to remain in the Emergency Department for a period of time until an appropriate bed is available.

Beds are assigned according to severity of illness and space availability on specialized units.

After your treatment
If your doctor gives you a prescription, it can be filled by the pharmacist in the OTMH PharmaCare Centre conveniently located in the Main Lobby. Hours of operation are posted in the Emergency Department.

The drug store also carries a wide variety of healthcare products for allergies, aches and pains, colds and flu as well as vitamins, diapers and more.

Follow Up
When you are discharged, you will receive instructions for your care after you leave. We may be calling you to ask if this information met your needs.
