Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Surgical Programs

Our Surgical Program includes a wide range of inpatient and "same-day" surgery services. These services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals, including nurses, surgeons, anaethetists, family physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, discharge planners, and a representative from the Community Care Access Centre.

The development of non-invasive surgical procedures, other technological advances and an increased trend to care in the community has led to approximately 80 per cent of all our surgery being done as day surgery. Patients arrive in the morning for surgery and return home later the same day to recuperate in the comfort of their own home. If you are required to stay with us, as an inpatient, you will be cared for on a 40-bed unit by a caring staff who are committed to your recovery.

Currently, we are accommodating our surgical procedures in 7 operating room theatres and a cysto suite. Patients receive care within the following surgical specialties:
  • Cardiovascular surgery
  • General surgery
  • Gynaecology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Oral Surgery
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Otolaryngology (ears, nose and throat)
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Urology

Some areas of clinical specialization include minimally invasive surgery, including laser application in many specialties, total joint replacements, pacemaker insertion, prostatectomy surgery, retinal procedures and renal calculae ( kidney stone removal) program.

Preadmission Clinic
All elective surgical patients access our surgical services through our Preadmission Clinic. Scheduled a few days before surgery, the clinic visit allows the patient to register, have nursing and anaesthesia assessments and any necessary blood and diagnostic tests. The nurse prepares the patient for surgery by reviewing what can be expected the day of surgery and any pre-operative instructions, especially regarding food and drink. With the preparations complete, patients can get a good night's sleep at home the night before surgery.

Our surgical team strives to provide consistent and coordinated care to our patients. We are committed to working with our patients throughout their surgical experience.

Carepaths
For many of our procedures, we provide a patient friendly Carepath to guide patients through their stay. The carepaths are evidence based and clearly describe the activities and treatments patients will need including information about care after discharge.

Pain Program
Management of post-operative pain is a high priority. We work with the patients to ensure that pain is controlled. One option may be a patient-controlled analgesia program that allows the patients to manage their own pain within prescribed limits.

Autologous Blood Donations Clinic
The OTMH Autologous Blood Donations Clinic is no longer operational. Communication from Canadian Blood Services described that, due to fiscal constraints, all hospital based autologous blood clinics in this area have been eliminated. Oakville residents requiring this service may attend the clinic at Canadian Blood Services in Hamilton or in Kitchener.

Speak to your physicians or surgeon if you are interested in exploring this option. For more information on the Autologous Blood donations, please call 1-888-376-6613.
